The Pontalba Buildings were designed by James Gallier in 1848. The building was originally designed for the Baronesses Micaela Pontalba. Upon her death, these buildings were turned into one of the first apartment buildings in the United States. This unique structure is very iconic of the New Orleans area, but this was the first of its kind. The structure is made by stacking 4, one block long sections of red brick on top another. This unique style, embellished with decorative railings and symmetrical window placement results in a interesting and beautiful style.
