Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower

The Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower is located in Tokyo, Japan. It is a 50 story educational building that soars to 669 feet, making it the second tallest educational facility in the world. There are three educational institutions that are located in the building. These are the Tokyo Mode Gakuen (fashion vocational school), HAL Tokyo (special technology and design college), and the Shuto Ikō (medical college).

The design was decided upon from a competition where Mode Gakuen asked architects to send in their designs with the only rule being that the building could not be rectangular.  After more than 150 proposals were sent in, the winning design was created by Tange Associates. The idea of their cocoon design was to symbolize the nurturing of the students inside. This building is very impressive to me and I love its symbolic design. The honeycomb white aluminum shell and deep blue glass interact perfectly together and earned the Emporis.com skyscraper of the year award in 2008.

This looks like a pretty cool building to check out. It so happens that I am going to Tokyo, Japan at the end of the semester and I will be sure to check it out.
