Aldo Rossi – Bonnefantenmuseum

A fine art museum currently located in the city of Maastricht, in the Netherlands, the Bonnefantenmuseum is a work of Aldo Rossi, which he produced in 1995. A glimpse of history: founded in 1884 as an archeological and historical museum, it was housed at some point in a convent (from 1951 to 1978), convent from which it obtained its current name.

As for its structure, the museum notably has a cupola stacked on top of a 15-or-so meter cylinder, resembling a rocket sticking out of its silo. The cupola has windows, an incorporated balcony and external supporting structures. The rest of the building has red brick outside walls and sizeable glass panels.

Cupola and bricks.

I’m not fond of this design at all. I can’t quite put my finger on which part bothers me most. Perhaps it’s the cupola, or a set of curves surrounded by right angles everywhere,  or the choice of materials, the different colours…
