Joe Louis Arena is where the Detroit Red Wings play hockey. Some of my favorite memories are of going to hockey games with my grandpa here. That makes it sound like he has passed away, but don’t worry – he is still alive and kicking. While the time spent here was great, the building itself is quite ugly. The only public entrance is pictured above. You have everyone marching up these concrete stairs, out of breath by the time they get to the front doors. The building has remarkably few windows, even for a hockey arena. The overhead view, shown below, is even worse. Architecturally, the building is entirely unremarkable, abhorrent even. That being said, I will be sad to see it close next year. What the building lacks in architectural luster, it makes up for in hockey tradition.
