Crow Island School

This building is a truly unique school located in Winnetka, Illinois.  Crow Island School was designed through collaboration of architects Lawrence Perkins, Todd Wheeler, Eero Saarinen, and his father Eliel Saarinen.   These designers worked directly with students and teachers in order to design a progressive school for learning.  The school is broken up into four separate wings for the different ages of students. Every classroom has access to an outside courtyard and every wings has their own play area.  The design of this structure was heavily influenced by the late 19h century ‘progressive education’ movement.  Progressive education aims to teach through experience and emphasized learning by doing, problem solving, and critical thinking.
