This church, designed by Tadao Ando, was built in 1989. An extension of the United Church of Christ in Japan, this building has a unique take on the traditional church style. Like many of Tadao Ando’s other work, this church is built completely out of cement. There is a large cross cut into the wall that lets in the morning light at it faces the east. This provides a stark contrast to the solid concrete structure, drawing parallels to the contrast of the physical and spiritual world. Despite the impression made in the photographs, the church is quite small. One fun fact is that many people who visit the building remark that it’s emptiness is quite disturbing.
