Caltrans District 7 Headquarters was designed by Thom Mayne of Morphosis and opened in September 24, 2004. The building is composed of a double skin of metal screens that open and close depending on the outside temperature. Office workers can adjust the aluminum panels by the amount of light and air let into individual’s offices. The L-shape building is composed of two main volumes and covers the entire block in downtown Los Angles. The sign on the building marks the entrance of the building at 100 South Main Street. However, it was the first building in California that was named under the Design Excellence Program.
