3 — Today’s Augusteum

The new building was constructed from 2007 to 2012 after an initiative by the citizens of Leipzig to replaced the old socialist building with one more attentive to the historical building destroyed in the Second World War. This building is very postmodern—it takes the original building’s church and breaks it up with glass and metal while retaining its form.

What a beautiful church! At first, I thought this was a building for some corporation. The building almost has a meta point of view, now knowing it’s a church. Meaning that with all the glass that it’s made of is almost self reflective. Being able to see the person you are BEFORE you walk into church and then seeing the person you are AFTER you walk out of the church.
